Basic Forging Methods Used in Custom Metal Fabrication
August 22, 2022

Forging is one of the most critical processes in the custom metal fabrication industry. It is the process in which the workpiece is beaten to the desired shape via compressive forces. The forces are usually delivered using hammering, pressing or rolling. There are many types of forging methods and making the right choice can be challenging. Check out the basic forging methods used in custom metal fabrication.

Basic Forging Methods Used in Custom Metal Fabrication

Open die forging:
The metal is never wholly restrained in the dies in open die forging. The heated metal parts are shaped between the top die, which is attached to a ram, and the bottom die, which is attached to the bolster or hammer. The workpiece is treated to temperatures ranging from 260°C to 1315.55°C. Once they have been appropriately heated, the pressing of the workpiece is performed to provide the desired shape.

Closed die forging:
Unlike open die forging, the workpiece gets entirely covered in a closed die forging. The top or the bottom die incorporates the shape of the forging as a negative image. The dies are then moved towards each other to achieve the desired shape. This process is best for heavy and bulky workpieces.

Roll forging:
Also known as roll forming, it is a method that requires opposing rolls to form a metal part. Two cylindrical or semi-cylindrical horizontal rolls are used to reduce the thickness and increase the length of the workpiece. It is vastly utilized in the automotive industry. Parts and components manufactured through roll forging have superior mechanical properties to those produced from open and closed die forging.
